Ambre – Celebrating Timeless Elegance
- Post by Marlieke Kemp - Janssen
Inspiration can spark anywhere. But for those who have seen the world, the stark contrasts in the environment and culture from one place to another can unlock a different perspective to what constitutes the word “beauty”.
In the case of designer Romyda Keth, owner and design genius behind Ambre, her eyes have seen beauty from different perspectives in different parts of the world. One step inside Ambre, her boutique in Siem Reap, and you’ll experience a deep dive into the culture and quiet sophistication that sets Romyda’s designs apart from the rest.
Changing the ideals of fashion
If there is one thing Romyda is passionate about, it’s about nurturing that desire to look good. She sees it as a clear form of self-respect and is an ode to her Asian roots. Asian women, after all, are culturally drawn to colorful ensembles that embrace the woman’s shape.
This much is evident in the pieces you’ll see in Ambre.
Ambre is a place where timeless feminine elegance is celebrated. The colors are vibrant and the textures add a distinct look to every piece. Romyna’s designs make it apparent that there is no such thing as being ‘overdressed’ – instead, women who shop here are given their well-deserved right to feel good and stand out.
Fated to be in design
Romyda was born in Phnom Penh. The daughter of a couple in the diplomatic corps, she was started travelling at a young age. They lived in Prague for a few years and eventually moved to Paris.
Indeed, it seems like fate that a young girl like her would end up in a place known for culture, art and design. She studied at the Paris School of Fine Arts before deciding to focus on the art she wanted to specialize in – fashion. She then decided to study at the Esmod School of Fashion Design where she further explored her potential in the field.
It was then that Macy’s, the American fashion giant, gave her the opportunity to bring her sketches to life. They added her to their esteemed roster of designers, giving her a platform where a global audience can appreciate her art.
Inspired by her roots
It was in 1994 when Romyda decided to go back to Cambodia with her husband and children. At the time, Cambodia had very little to offer especially when it came to design, but Romyda saw the potential.
It was perfect timing that her clients in Paris were still buzzing about her designs. She started sketching right in her very home, assigning a small corner as her workshop.
Of course, finding inspiration in her homeland was easy enough, knowing that Cambodia had a lot to offer in terms of fabrics. This is how she started creating some of her best works and built the name that has now become a go-to when it comes to premium ensembles in Cambodia – Ambre.
Visit Ambre at The Aviary Square every day from 10AM to 6PM. Aside from women’s clothes, Ambre also offers a wide selection for men and children.
