Things to see in Siem Reap

It’s no secret that Siem Reap and its Cambodian surrounds are idyllic for travellers of every kind. The Aviary Hotel is committed to lending you the destination know-how you need to make your journey a meaningful one. Here’s our locals guide to things to see and do in Siem Reap.

Pub Street

Siem Reap’s Pub Street is exactly what it sounds like—a street chock full of joints serving up beverages and plates to satiate every desire. Also known as Street 8, this alley is a realm for the night owl in you. It’s bustling with entertainment and saturated with fellow travelers, giving you the glimpse of evening enthusiasm you’ve been waiting for. While drinks may be on the menu for this adventure, we’re here to remind you of the classic Cambodian fare that makes its way to Pub Street, so keep your foodie senses keen.

Markets

Among popular things to see in Siem Reap, the markets of Siem Reap are a destination all their own. From dawn to dusk, you can find handmade trinkets, homemade delicacies and plenty of Cambodian smiles to top it all off. Find crafts at Phsar Chas, or Old Market. Taste local fare at the Angkor Night Market, and determine which Cambodian-made souvenir strikes you best at the Made in Cambodia Market. Phsar means market in Khmer, so keep an eye out for names like this and you’ll be well on your way to becoming a phsar connoisseur in every corner of Siem Reap.

Kandal Village

If you’re seeking a worthy place to spend a buck, Kandal Village is it. This destination has got the goods, literally. A neighbourhood that also goes by the name Hap Guan, Kandal Village is teeming with chic boutiques, niche art galleries, premium spas and cafes that deserve a return visit. This is a small area, but a very saturated one, so take your sweet time strolling through the nooks and crannies of a colonial-inspired Asian neighborhood such as this. With food, coffee, art and more, you can easily waste your day away.

The Temples of Angkor

Firstly, the Angkor Small Tour Circuit is the perfect opportunity to make your way through some of Angkor Wat’s most prolific temples without stressing over just where to go. Of course, this circuit starts off with none other than Angkor Wat itself, a legendary temple known across the globe for its size and complexity. Finally you’ve crossed of the most impressive among things to see in Siem Reap. Other fulfilling stops along the way include temples like Bayon, Baphuon, Ta Prohm and Ta Keo, all of which bring immense history, plentiful notoriety and maybe even a little superstition. For a small circuit, this is one rather enriching round.

Alternatively, if the small tour circuit just doesn’t cut it for you this time around, the Angkor Grand Tour Circuit should do the trick. Here, you can encounter destinations only found in this region, a region with a history that dates back farther than one can imagine. From the temples of Preah Khan and to the healing spa of Neak Pean and much more, you’ll witness your version of Cambodia come to life in real time. Best of all, you’ll get to do it at your own pace.

Lastly, for a day full of adventure, exploring Banteay Srei & Beng Mealea is the obvious choice. The temple ruins of Beng Mealea really put into perspective just how far back Cambodia’s culture actually goes. Meanwhile, the artisanal carvings notched within every corner of the temple of Banteay Srei makes one take notice of the little things even more. What’s more is that by visiting these magnificent sites, you’re bound to catch photogenic glimpses of lush rice paddies, bucolic countryside along the way and many other things to see in Siem Reap’s rural areas. Upon your return to your comfortable hotel, you’ll likely feel even more grateful for the experiences you’ve had.
