Angkor Grand Tour Circuit
There’s more than one way to explore Angkor, and the Angkor Grand Tour Circuit provides a lovely alternative to those who wish to dig deeper into the region’s complexities. Moreover, parts of this Angkor Wat Tour tend to be a bit less crowded than the small tour circuit, allowing fervent travelers the chance to get a little local on the route.
The grand tour of Angkor is a circuit that leads you through much of the temples you can see on the small circuit, but also adds a few interesting stops along the way. These additional destinations include Preah Khan, East Mebon and Pre Rup. The latter is one of the best places to watch the sunset in Angkor.
Most often, this tour takes a full day, though if you want to do it on your own terms, you can take as much or as little time as you need to. For your comfort, you can even arrange a tour from a company that will pick you up right from your accommodation at The Aviary Hotel.
Preah Khan
After Angkor Wat, widely considered the most impressive stop on this grand circuit Angkor Wat tour, Preah Khan is the largest flat temple in all of Angkor. In fact, there was a period of time centuries ago when this temple was an entire city in and of itself. A lot has changed since the 12th century, when the temple was built to honor King Jayavarman VII’s father; but alas, this scene remains one worth reveling in.
Neak Pean
Not all reverent sites are created equal, and Neak Pean is evidence. Just east of Preah Khan, it actually sits on an island that was once submerged by a reservoir. Here, you’ll see a number of pools that surround a central arena, with plentiful structures depicting credence literally set in stone.
Ta Som
If you’ve seen photos of the temples of Angkor or even been to some of them yourself, you’re bound to be familiar with the unmistakable image of a strangler fig. Ta Som represents the might of this tree with grace, showcasing nature’s ability to take even the most sturdy of man-made structures back into its grasp.
East Mebon
Travelers like yourself can discover a world of intricate carvings galore at East Mebon, where artistry serves as a way of honoring utmost spirituality. Also on an island in what was once referred to as East Baray reservoir, this temple evokes a sense of wonder from first glance.
Pre Rup
A splendidly old temple that arrived in the 10th century, Pre Rup is the largest of its time. To add to it, the positioning of this temple makes for a great view of the sunset, so you can feel comfortable nearing the end of your circuit here.
Prasat Leak Neang
A cluster of small stone towers beginning to be taken over by the greenery that surrounds them, Prasat Leak Neang marks the close of the Angkor grand tour circuit. Take one last look back in time before making your way to a delectable dinner in Siem Reap.
