Drinking Water That Makes a Difference at The Aviary Hotel

Culture shock can hit in any number of ways. One of the first things people have to become accustomed to when they visit Cambodia revolves around drinking water. Unlike many places in the world, tap water is not inherently safe to drink here. That’s where filtered water in Siem Reap comes into play.

Thanks to Water for Cambodia, The Aviary Hotel now features water filters all throughout the hotel. This way, our guests and staff alike can get drinking water at a moment’s notice, and support a worthy mission in the process.

How We Support a Better Cambodia Through Filtered Water in Siem Reap

The Aviary Hotel enlisted the help of Water for Cambodia to install water filters throughout our hotel’s premises. We chose this organization consciously. They do all they can to better the Cambodian community they hail from, and that’s something we can get behind.

While their money comes from bringing clean drinking water to Cambodians as well as those visiting the nation, Water for Cambodia does more than install filters. They use their profits to uplift the impoverished community in a number of ways.

The organization funds literacy classes for Cambodian women to improve their reading and writing skills. These classes also promote knowledge of math, a valuable skill for those hoping to escape poverty. Water for Cambodia works to create libraries in communities that need it most, and they teach classes on hygiene and health for household caregivers who may have never received this kind of education.

In their own words, Water for Cambodia’s efforts boil down to the desire to break the cycle of poverty. This is possible through clean water, education and support. At The Aviary Hotel, we couldn’t be more proud to support this group; they go well beyond the status quo to alter many a Cambodian’s trajectory.

Effectively Filtered Drinking Water

How do the water filters at The Aviary Hotel really work? It starts with a little something called biosand water filters. The dirty water goes in the top, where it filters through layers of sand and gravel. Clean water comes out of the bottom, and does so within mere minutes. The sand and gravel removes bacteria, protozoa, turbidity and iron from the water.

With the help of their water testing lab, which monitors the performance of the filters, Water for Cambodia makes sure the drinking water is clean on a regular basis. One family of 5-8 people can rely on a single filter for years, drastically improving the wellbeing of those in rural areas of Cambodia.

The filters at our hotel add to the 24,000 Water for Cambodia filters currently in place, which bring clean water to hundreds of thousands of people. Most of those people live in rural villages, where access to necessary resources can often be few and far between.

An Environmentally Friendly Impact

As for us, we’re all about supporting eco-friendly movements. With filters throughout our hotel, we’re able to cut down on the use of plastic water bottles. Our guests won’t have to go out and purchase plastic from the convenience stores, contributing to a drastic reduction in trash over time. Cambodia is definitely not immune to the current environmental crisis, and plastic rubbish is a big contender. If we continue to make small efforts, they’ll surely amount to something monumental.
