The Aviary Giftware Exclusive: Take Home Inspiring Art Installations by Victoria Brooker

Art has always been a wonderful representation of any locality’s culture. Here at The Aviary Hotel, we celebrate Cambodia through visual pieces found all over the hotel, drawing inspiration from the rich natural diversity all over the country.

To further inspire our guests even as they return home, we are now selling the birds used as ornaments in the hotel. As symbols of the diversity in arts and culture here in Cambodia, these pieces will remind you of your wonderful stay in the hotel and the overall experience unique to this region.

The Inspiration: The Cambodian Tailor Bird and The Sarus Crane

The Cambodian common Tailorbird

The Cambodian Tailor Bird was first discovered in Phnom Penh in 2009. Experts say that its discovery is extraordinary, knowing that distinct bird species are not usually discovered around large cities.

Meanwhile, the Sarus Crane is considered the tallest flying bird in the world. While it breeds around the country’s northern parts, it eventually moves into Southern Cambodia to forage for food.

The Cambodian Sarus Crane

Both birds display the same grace, beauty, and uniqueness of Cambodia. This is why they both served as inspiration to Victoria Brooker, the artist who created the masterpieces found around the hotel.

Behind the Art: Victoria Brooker

It was just a 3-day stopover for Victoria Brooker back in 2012. But the beauty she witnessed in Cambodia was something she could never forget, cementing her decision to stay and be part of the unique tapestry of arts and culture unique to this place.

As an artist and storyteller, she knew the impact of being culturally immersed. She dove into everything Cambodia offers, learning and experiencing as much as possible. All of these became evident in how her artistry evolved.

Today, she calls Siem Reap and Phnom Penh her home.

The Masterpieces Made Exclusively for The Aviary

Victoria Brooker’s fascination with all things Cambodian translates into the intricacy of the art installations exclusively made for The Aviary Hotel. Just as Victoria fell in love with this place, we also want guests to take the magic home with them through these beautiful pieces.

These creations were inspired by three things — the Khmer shadow puppet theatre, known as Sbek Thom, Cambodia’s unique textiles and patterns, and the Kingdom’s rich bird life.

The wall fixtures inspired by the Cambodian Tailor Birds come in three sizes, all hand-finished with matte gold paint. The installations depicting the Sarus Crane come in six sizes, all with a black powder finish.

Staying true to our commitment to sustainability, these birds were crafted in partnership with local businesses, keeping the creations completely plastic-free.
