Pchum Ben: Cambodia’s 15-Day Festival of Remembrance

Pchum Ben draws travelers from all over right into the heart of Cambodia. The 15-day festival is the perfect example of Cambodia’s rich tapestry of tradition and spirituality where families unite and pagodas awaken.

But Pchum Ben is more than a festival; it is a spiritual journey, a time to honor ancestors, and a testament to the enduring cultural heritage of Cambodia.

Celebrating The Soul’s Journey

Pchum Ben Day falls on the 15th day of the 10th Khmer month. Buddhists believe that this marks the start of the soul’s journey to purgatory. Each soul’s karma and the offerings given by those souls’ loved ones during the journey will decide how their journey ends.

This is why Cambodians use this time to visit pagodas and offer food to the monks. Pchum means “to gather,” while Ben means “ball of food.”

Monks Angkor Wat

While Pchum Ben is considered a religious family event, it is also a beautiful tradition that builds community. Everyone is free to participate in the ceremony, allowing the living to get together and pray for the souls, not just their loved ones, but the loved ones of everyone around them.

Visiting Siem Reap during Pchum Ben

Even before Pchum Ben comes, locals normally make plans to go home to their home provinces. But that doesn’t mean Siem Reap won’t be worth visiting in this season. If anything, the festivities create opportunities for visitors to witness Cambodian culture and tradition.

You can visit Angkor Wat and other temples in the area to witness the locals’ practices. The monks chant throughout the night, a form of prayer in the protection of the souls they are praying for.

If you decide to take part in the festivities, just remember that this is a solemn celebration. But this doesn’t mean the entire festival is one of silence. The final day is worth waiting for, with families getting together and celebrating. Expect food and music as they cherish each other’s company before going back to the hustle and bustle of life.
