Smateria’s IKI Collection: Sustainable, Fashionable, and Ethical

Most of the plastic wastes are often being burned, producing toxic fumes and microplastic fibers that are harmful to people’s health and the environment. But at Smateria, plastics are given another life and purpose.

In the past two years, Smateria has successfully recycled 4255 kilograms of plastic waste, turning them into fashionable bags and accessories – a very important milestone that can hopefully inspire many individuals to take their first step in making the world more liveable for the next generations to come.

Smateria’s latest IKI collection proves the brand’s sincere initiative in creating sustainable products out of waste. From plastics used in industrial packaging the company receives from factories, Smateria has produced fashion pieces through a mindful and compassionate process of recycling.

Ethical Fashion Pieces by Progressive Women of Smateria

Behind any great product are the brains and hearts that started the creation. Two equally passionate and enthusiastic women were at the right place and at the right time.

The Birth of Smateria

In 2006, Jennifer Morellato and Elisa Lion met in Cambodia; two progressive minds had the same thing in mind–creating sustainable products that would bring value to people’s lives.

Even before the birth of Smateria, uniqueness was already the priority as Elisa’s creations were already made of unusual and recycled materials: from fishing and construction materials to leftover leather from sofa factories and plastic materials.

Women Supporting Women

What’s even more inspiring is that these two powerful women are also passionate about empowering other women. In fact, 75% of Smateria’s team consists of female workers.

As they grew with the company, some of them became mothers while working with the brand and were granted 100% paid maternal leave. And because the founders understand the challenges that come with motherhood, and the value of education, the company decided to put up daycare inside the building, with breastfeeding stations and nursery, pre-school and after school for children.
