The Story Behind Our Carpets – SCRAP Siem Reap

This month we share with you the wonderful story behind our carpets. You probably noticed the elegantly handcrafted rugs in our lobby and public areas when you visited The Aviary Hotel, or perhaps you saw them on pictures on our website on Facebook or on Instgram?

SCRAP Siem Reap

A rug can set the tone for an entire space, so selecting the right rugs for our hotel was an important choice. It shouldn’t be the dominant element of the space, but rather a part of the overall scheme. To us, it was also important that the carpets are easy to maintain and fit in with the existing interior design. That is Godie van de Paal’s expertise came in. Godie is the owner of SCRAP Siem Reap and with her, we talked about different designs, colors, and patterns. Soon we found the perfect match for our interior. Say hello to our round, grey-brown carpets made out of microfiber.

Reduce waste material

Besides the design and quality, what is it that we like so much about these rugs? Well first of all, just like all other products from SCRAP Siem Reap, these carpets are made out of material that would otherwise go to waste. Together with her team of Cambodian artisans, The Dutch designer gives these high-quality microfiber materials, which come from a factory producing pouches and cloths for exclusive eyewear brands, a new meaning. The soft, sturdy and washable characteristics make it the ideal base for carpets, upholstery and home accessories. Every one of the rugs is handmade, with love and dedication.

Fair Trade

Secondly, we support fair trade, as SCRAP Siem Reap creates opportunities for local artisans. Taking into consideration the social, economic and environmental well-being of its staff, SCRAP Siem Reap does their utmost best to care for them. Fair wages are being paid, health insurance is being taken care of and the girls enjoy subsidized meals.

About SCRAP Siem Reap: SCRAP Siem Reap was founded by Godie van de Paal, a Dutch designer who felt that something had to be done about the waste of the microfiber cloths at one of the world’s most prominent brands’ eyewear factories. At the time, she had already launched her own company KOW Lifestyle; the manufacturing of crocheted slippers. The first badge of slippers was just sent to The Netherlands for a quality control test and so the production team had some spare time. “What if we cut the microfiber waste into smaller strips, could we then use them for crocheting projects?” Godie turned this thought into action and so the first SCRAP Siem Reap products were born. Today people and businesses can buy a whole range of rugs, furniture, cushions, and accessories.
