With climate change such a pertinent issue of today, we thought we'd do our part to bring renewable energy to The Aviary Hotel. However, we wanted to get creative in our mission to reduce our carbon footprint, which brought us to energy-generating gym equipment.

Take Our Eco-Friendly Equipment for a Spin

The Aviary Hotel has a brand-new gym, which is an exciting feat. When planning for this addition, we wanted to do something out of the norm. For us, that meant combining our love for the planet with our goals for the hotel.

Here's how it works:

• Our new bicycles and treadmills don't take any electricity to run, so they're actually eco-friendly from the get-go.
• When any of our guests hop on a bicycle or treadmill, their workout generates electricity to run a portion of the hotel (if there was ever a reason to go hard or go home, it's this!).
• This helps both the hotel and the guests who stay there become closer to carbon-neutral than ever before.

While it may sound too good to be true, we promise it's legit. When we found out that we could invest in equipment that was right at the forefront of sustainable engineering, we couldn't help but dive in.

The Sustainable Specs

SportsArt Eco-Powr G690 Treadmill - The first of its kind. This treadmill harnesses human prowess for the sake of renewable energy creation. From walking to sprinting, you can go at your own pace, ultimately capturing a maximum of 200 watts of electricity per hour of energy. Use the LCD display to read your key performance indicators as you go, including calories, pace, heart rate and target speed.

Now in the form of a cycle, you're able to transform your physiological steam into usable electricity that goes beyond the bike. From the toggle controls to the fan, you have everything you need and more for a stellar workout that powers more than just your workout.

While the bike and treadmill are the faces of sustainable equipment in The Aviary gym, they're not the only noteworthy pieces of machinery. We're eager to share our Functional Trainer and Adjustable Bench, both of which are state-of-the-art additions from none other than SportsArt themselves.

A Gym That Joins a Wider Eco-Friendly Effort

While energy-renewing gym equipment may be the latest effort on our part to increase sustainability, it's definitely not the only one.

• With the help of Coco Khmer, we give our soap bars a second life by recycling unused soap and turning it into a refreshed, usable and totally clean bar.
• We source our eggs from Eggscellent, a local free-range chicken farm that keeps every part of the production process in mind. Their employees, chickens, land and customers are all happy.
• All of the carpets and rugs throughout our hotel come from SCRAP Siem Reap. This brand focuses on beautiful designs that reduce waste material and maintain a fair trade system.
• Our tap water is drinkable, and it's all thanks to Water for Cambodia, who helps to bring drinkable water to remote villages throughout the country.

From human rights to animal and planetary justice, we're doing our best to learn and grow with each passing day. Now, some treadmills and stationary bicycles just so happen to be a part of that.
